A standard 10 gallon aquarium measures about 20 × 10 × 12 in (51 × 25 × 30 cm) on the outside. Exact sizes vary by brand: Aqueon lists 20¼ × 10½ × 129⁄16 in and Marineland 207⁄32 × 107⁄32 × 123⁄16 in. Once it's set up with 2 inches of sand, it holds roughly 8 gallons of water and weighs about 95–100 lb in total.

Not every 10 gallon is the same size

The “10 gallon” label is a class of tank, not an exact measurement. Here is what each source actually lists:

Checked 24 Sep 2026. Marineland's full weight is simply the label gallons × 8.34 lb plus the empty tank; Aqueon's is closer to the full outside volume filled with water. Neither includes sand, rock or the stand. That's why the two brands disagree.

10 gallon vs the sizes around it

The 10 is the smallest of the common “standard” tanks. The next steps up change the footprint, so each needs its own stand and lid:

For not much more floor space, a 20 gallon long holds about twice the water, which makes temperature and water quality easier to keep steady.

Is a 10 gallon too small?

For the right fish, no. Measured from the outside, an Aqueon 10 comes to 11.6 gallons. Once it's set up with 2 in of sand it holds about 8.2 gallons, and about 9.9 with a bare bottom. With that little water:

  • Temperature and water quality change faster than in a bigger tank, so a missed water change shows up sooner.
  • Fish choice is limited to small, peaceful species that stay small as adults. Goldfish, angelfish and most cichlids need far more room.
  • It's light enough for ordinary furniture. Set up, it weighs about 102 lb, so a sturdy dresser or desk rated for that weight works, where a 29 or 55 needs a proper stand.

If you're choosing a first tank and have the space, a 20 long costs little more and is more forgiving.

How much water a 10 gallon really holds

Multiply the outside dimensions of an Aqueon 10 and you get 11.6 gallons. You never get that much water, because of three things:

  1. Glass. With about 3/16 in glass (an estimate; check your tank), the inside is roughly 19⅞ × 10⅛ in.
  2. The gap at the top. Most people keep the water about an inch below the rim.
  3. Substrate. Two inches of sand takes up about 7 litres of space.

That leaves about 9.9 gallons with a bare bottom and 8.2 gallons with 2 in of sand. Use the real figure, not the label, when you dose medication or water conditioner.

Weight and stand

A set-up Aqueon 10 comes to about 102 lb: 11 lb of glass, about 68 lb of water and about 23 lb of sand, before rock and the stand itself. That sits on 1.5 square feet.

  • A set-up 10 gallon weighs about 102 lb, far more than it looks. Check the furniture's rating, not just its size.
  • Avoid thin particleboard shelves; they can sag under a steady load over months.
  • Keep it level: a tank that rocks on an uneven surface puts stress on the seams.

Aqueon 10, 3/16 in glass, 1 in gap, 2 in sand: inside 19.88 × 10.12 in, water height 12.5625 − 0.1875 − 1 − 2 = 9.375 in. 19.88 × 10.12 × 9.375 = 1,887 in³ ÷ 231 = 8.2 gal (30.9 L).

Marineland 10, 3/16 in glass, 1 in gap, 2 in sand: inside 19.84 × 9.844 in, water height 12.1875 − 0.1875 − 1 − 2 = 9 in. 19.84 × 9.844 × 9 = 1,758 in³ ÷ 231 = 7.6 gal (28.8 L).

Bare-bottom Aqueon 10, 3/16 in glass, 1 in gap, 0 in sand: inside 19.88 × 10.12 in, water height 12.5625 − 0.1875 − 1 − 0 = 11.38 in. 19.88 × 10.12 × 11.38 = 2,289 in³ ÷ 231 = 9.9 gal (37.5 L).

FAQ

What size tank is 20 × 10 × 12?

A 20 × 10 × 12 inch tank is a standard 10 gallon. Measured from the outside that's 10.4 gallons (39 litres). The water you actually get once it's set up is lower, about 7.2 gallons with 2 in of sand.

How much does a 10 gallon tank weigh when full?

Aqueon lists 111 lb and Marineland 94 lb full. Our estimate with 2 in of sand is about 102 lb before rocks and decor.

What are the dimensions of an Aqueon 10 gallon tank?

Aqueon's size chart lists its 10 gallon “Leader” tank at 20¼ × 10½ × 12 9/16 in, including the plastic trim.

How many litres is a 10 gallon tank?

10 US gallons is 37.9 litres. Once set up, expect roughly 31–38 litres of actual water depending on substrate.

Is a 10 gallon fish tank too small?

Not for small, peaceful species that stay small. It is too small for goldfish, angelfish and most cichlids, and water conditions change faster than in bigger tanks.
